BIOGRAPHIE :
Richard Carlson naît dans le
Minnesota où il fit des études d’art dramatique et de littérature à l’Université
du Minnesota. Il y enseigna aussi ses
mêmes sujets se risquant aussi à se produire dans les théâtres locaux avant de
faire le grand saut.
Très vite remarqué, Carlson
décrochera des rôles à Broadway, jouant dans des productions comme “The Ghost of Yankee Doodle” (1937) et “Stars In Your Eyes” (1939).
On
le verra pour la première fois dans une production de David Selznick,
The Young in Heart,
en 1938. Il s’installera à Hollywood l’année suivante puis se produira en
free-lance avec plusieurs studios sur place où il fut distribué dans des films
comme “The Howards of Virginia” (1940), “Too Many Girls” (1940), “Hold That Ghost” (1941) et “The Affairs of Martha” (1942). Comme tant d’autres acteurs de
son époque, il mit en veilleuse sa carrière pour participer à l’effort de
guerre. Il fit son service militaire en Europe et eut, tout comme eux, de
grandes difficultés à retrouver du travail - ou du moins des bons rôles - un
coup le grand conflit terminé.
Dès le début des années 50,
Carlson dût reconstruire toute sa carrière : si au début de celle-ci on le
voyait dans des drames ou des comédies romantiques, on le verra désormais dans
des films de science-fiction ou des films dont trois d’entre eux feront acte
dans l’histoire du cinéma : “The Maze” (1953), “It Came From
Outer Space” (1953), et “The Creature From the Black Lagoon” (1954).
On pourra aussi le voir tenir la vedette dans le film d’horreur de Bert I.
Gordon, “Tormented”
en 1960 et jouer dans deux westerns-spaghetti avant qu’il ne prenne sa retraite
à la fin des années 60.
A noter aussi que Richard
Carlson tint la vedette de la série télévisée I Led Three Lives qui sera
en ondes de 1953 à 1956.
Mariée à l’actrice Mona
Mayfield, il fut victime d’une grave hémorragie cérébrale le 24 novembre 1977.
